New York Talk Exchange: Globalization Patters and Networks at the NY Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art recently exhibited the called New York Talk Exchange, a work of art consinting of real-time maps charting New York city social networks.

The works were based on researchers analisys from MIT, who are also using international data flows of cell talk and Internet traffic to capture the complexity of social dynamics, both of local life and globalization. Heading the research are scientists such as Carlo Ratti, director of the MIT SENSEable laboratory.

This dynamic geography of conversation revealed “the rythms of NY’s relationships to more than 200 countries… Communication surges every morning, when the NY Stock Exchange opens.” Interesting data: the city most dialed is London. Almost 12% of the electronic traffic went to Seoul, and 8% to Porto, in Portugal. MIT Researchers have also created real-time electronic maps of cellphone use and crowd movements in Rome, Milan and the metropolitan area of Gratz, Austria.

Data are taken are a high level, so that there are not privacy problems
involved (Robert Hotz reports on June 10th, Wall Street Journal).
